Business Week's No. 26 - Varian Systems

No. 26: Varian Medical Systems

Industry: Health Care
Sales: $1.8 billion
Net Income: $245.4 million

Varian Medical Systems (VAR) has long been thought of as the Microsoft of radiation-therapy equipment used to treat cancer. With its 50%-plus market share, methodical rollout of products, and distribution clout with hospitals, the Palo Alto (Calif.) company dominates its space. In early 2007, Chief Executive Timothy Guertin watched shares dip as two competitors went public. But since June 30, shares have risen 10%, to 45, far outperforming rivals. Investors are anticipating software that reduces the time of a radiation treatment from 20-plus minutes to 5 minutes or less.
