No. 24: Rockwell Collins
Industry: Industrials
Sales: $4.5 billion
Net Income: $596 million
Spun off seven years ago from industrial giant Rockwell International, this $4.4 billion-a-year, Cedar Rapids (Iowa) aerospace concern has gotten a huge lift from the booming commercial and military aircraft markets. Chief Executive Clayton Jones, a former fighter pilot, invests big in research. The result: new electronic gadgets that make jets easier and safer to fly, including translucent, heads-up displays that allow pilots to monitor flight data without taking their eyes off the sky. Jones, who has led Rockwell Collins (COL) to double-digit earnings and sales growth in recent years, predicts a strong 2008, too.
