No. 4: Verizon
Industry: Telecommunication Services
Sales: $93.5 billion
Net Income: $5.5 billion
Telecommunications providers have hit some turbulence lately, but not Verizon (VZ). In 2007, shares of the New York telco rose 17%, driven by strong results in wireless. Sales grew 6%, to $93.5 billion, while operating income rose 16%, to $15.6 billion. Under CEO Ivan Seidenberg, Verizon has bet big on broadband, spending close to $20 billion laying fiber-optic cables. Meanwhile, executives expect the wireless business to continue generating double-digit sales growth as it lures customers with data services that can deliver text messaging, photos, and videos to cell phones.
